Our son had his first 6 month check-up today which is a big deal in the life of a heart warrior. It means his heart was showing signs of stability 6 months ago. And hopefully, one day closer to yearly visits, one day. Other than his 4-year old melt-downs and unwillingness to do weight, height,EKG or echo all went well. Really well. But I do have to give him credit for his pulse ox, he did that without a hitch :). Everything was the same as it was 6 months ago, amazing. Meaning, his pulmonary arteries had the same pressure readings, his right atrium also had the same pressure readings, his conduit or replacement pulmonary valve looked good and his heart wall looked the same as last time. We are hoping and praying for the same 6 months from now.
His last surgery to replace the valve was at 18 months and it was his second. We were told then he would could possibly get 5 to 10 years out of this conduit and we can only hope for the best.
He amazes me everyday with his kind heart, warm smile and a laugh I could listen to forever. We are truly proud of our son and what he has accomplished in such a short period of time in his life.
No the appointments won't get easier and the conversation with him gets harder but at the end of the day its a win.
Next week is CHD awareness week from the 7th to the 14th, please take some time to think of the heart warriors in your life and send some positive thoughts. And of course please help spread awareness. The more we know, the better chance my son and daughter have at a good life.
